Having studied multiple true crime cases, I always go back to one certain case, the Gypsy Rose Blanchard case. Gypsy was severely abused, both mentally and physically, by her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. To escape the abuse, Gypsy had her then-boyfriend, Nick Godejon, kill her mother. 

Now, after her release on December 28, 2023, after eight years in prison, Gypsy has become a world-known “influencer” of sorts. She has started an Instagram and TikTok with her family and husband. She has also been on countless TV shows and news channels, telling the world her story in her own words. Gypsy also has a new docuseries that just came out, The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, as well as a memoir titled Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom.

Many believe that Gypsy should have never gone to prison for the crime she committed, but there are lots of other people who disagree. There are numerous people disgusted that she has become an influencer, and people have started looking up to her. Some people are now saying that if Gypsy was allowed to be released, the Menendez brothers should be able to be paroled as well.

In my opinion, Gypsy should have gone to a mental hospital instead of prison. However, I think that what is happening in the present, the fact that people are idolizing her, is weird. The bottom line, she did plan her mother’s death, and that should not go unseen. I see the argument both ways, but I believe that Gypsy should stay off of social media for a bit, trying to learn how to live a somewhat normal life before being thrown in the spotlight.
