“Self Reliance’’ is a comedy thriller directed and starred in by Jake Johnson. Johnson’s character Tommy has fallen into a dull routine, so when Andy Samberg arrives in a limo to invite him to play a life or death game show, he agrees. If Tommy can stay alive for 30 days, he wins $1 million. He can only be attacked when he is alone, but he struggles to convince his family that the whole thing is real. After a few days, Maddy, played by Anna Kendrick, tells Tommy she is playing the game too, and the pair join forces.
The film explores the meaning of friendship and connection, and how sometimes we need more than “self reliance” to survive. While at times the mechanics of the game show become complicated, there is a constant uncanny feeling because the characters are being watched by hidden cameras. My favorite part would have to be the “production assistant ninjas” who talk to Tommy when he is alone. They instruct him on what the producers want to keep the audience entertained. Knowing he is put in danger simply for the enjoyment of others makes the game even more difficult to withstand.
“Self Reliance” had a decent concept that blends comedy with absurdity. It is a must watch for fans of the actors and has something for everyone to enjoy.
