I recently had to read Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried for my World Literature class, and it was not a disappointing read.
The novel is a composition of short stories written by Tim O’Brien, who was a Vietnam veteran. He shares the vast experiences that he had as a veteran. He shares the anger, frustration, and sadness that come with being in war. However, he also shares the love, friendship, and memorable moments that he had with his fellow soldiers.
O’Brien touches on subjects that could be triggering for some readers, such as PTSD, death, and some gore. He also talks about suicidal tendencies and hurting oneself. As triggering as these ideals are, they are relevant to the lives of soldiers, and O’Brien touches perfectly on them.
Since the book is comprised of multiple short stories, it is very easy to read and follow along. Each story can stand on its own, but they all flow together to make a beautiful and compelling story.
I have never enjoyed a required book as much as I enjoyed this one. It was hard for me to put down at times. I felt the need to cry, but also laugh at the same time. The novel is so beautifully written, and it compels you to want to learn more.
I would give this book a 10/10 and recommend it to anybody who is looking for their next beautiful read.
