Editorial: Future Plans Impact Collegiate Life

Navigate Left
Navigate Right

What to do after high school is something that every graduating senior is faced with. There is not one set plan that everyone follows, so the year after graduation can look very different. While already common in other parts of the world, gap years have become increasingly popular in the United States. Gap years are a unique opportunity to do anything from work to travel before continuing to a postsecondary education, allowing students to gain real world skills and experiences before deciding on the career or degree they want to pursue. Taking a gap year can also be beneficial for students’ mental health after the rigor of high school.

Much like the decision to take a gap year or not, choosing to attend a small university can have unique effects. A smaller campus often means a smaller student body, so your education is more individualized and focused. Big colleges are often the norm, as they have the allure of name recognition and a wider variety of degrees. However, small colleges can provide a stronger sense of community while also focusing more on students’ individual needs.

Depending on the program or destinations someone chooses for their gap year, they can quickly become expensive. For someone choosing to not work, affording food, housing, and travel may not be possible. Someone who has poor time management, decision making skills, and financial responsibility should rethink taking a gap year. Similarly, small colleges come with a higher price tag too. These universities do not have equal funding compared to larger institutions and often lack the same resources and amount of opportunities.

Taking a gap year or continuing your education at a small university are just two of the endless options for seniors to choose from. Students may also go into the trades, military, work force, community college, etc. Planning for the rest of your life now can seem daunting, but everyone’s path is within their own hands. Everyone should make their decision on what to do following high school based on what makes the most sense for their future goals.
