Matt Barno ensures students can succeed and have a healthy environment in his classroom
Teacher Matt Barno

Matt Barno is a Social Studies teacher at Crown Point High School, teaching mainly sophomores and juniors.  Barno uses various techniques while he teaches his students.

“I teach social studies, primarily Dual Credit US History and AP Psychology,” Barno said. “I like them both for different reasons. AP Psych is interesting because it tends to be more applicable to kids’ everyday lives, so it’s fun to talk about and give examples. History is fun just because I’m a nerd, and I like the subject matter. I get to talk about what I like.”

As a teacher, Barno tries his best to keep students engaged and keep the subject matter up to date. Whether it is talking to colleagues at school or other AP graders, Barno is always trying to find new activities or lessons to work on with his students.

“Something I find challenging is trying to keep things fresh and new. Sometimes you find something in a rhythm that works and you like it, but you can’t keep doing the same thing over and over. It’s hard to break away from things you like to do and know that it’s better for the kids or the class. That can be a challenge, just constantly refreshing and improving upon things,” Barno said.

Barno practices various supporting strategies to make sure everyone in the community is included. Barno has much appreciation for students who put in lots of effort in his class.

“My favorite aspect of CPHS is the overall community, whether it’s the student body community, the faculty community, or just the community at large,” Barno said. “I think it’s a great support structure. I think everybody has the same visions and goals. The kids are always very receptive and hardworking. The teachers are always working together and collaborating and creating an environment that is great to work in.”

With the other staff members and Barno’s history and psychology experience behind him, he is able to try and give students the best learning experience possible.
