“The Summer of Broken Rules,” by K.L. Walther was a masterpiece of a book. While the actual plot line seems a little trivial at first, the story itself is shrouded in grief, recovery, healing, and love. In this book, a girl named Meredith is struggling with the death of her sister.
This story takes place on Martha’s Vineyard, somewhere the main character has been going since her early childhood, where she is brought back to for her cousin’s wedding. Her cousin is marrying a man named Michael, who happens to have a nerdy but very kind step-brother named Wit. Wit and Meredith then form a secret alliance for the course of a wedding-party-wide game of assassins.
This book, although seemingly immature due to the nature of the plot line, does a great job weaving together childhood innocence, summer fun, and themes of grief and healing. This is a wonderful summer read due to the setting and the romance of the book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun, beachy read.
My only critique of this novel is that while the dialogue is hilarious, the writing style can be a bit surface-level at times. However, other than that I would give this book a solid 4 out of 5 stars. This book is a great read, filled with important subjects that I think would really help people who may be struggling with grief or who just need a pick-me-up, happy story.
