The job of a school nurse is to provide care, comfort, and support to all students, but our nurses go above and beyond to ensure that everyone can be happy, healthy, and ready to learn.
Nurses Cori Sabotnik and Carisa Oman are constantly trying their best to make sure that students can leave in better spirits when they stop into their office.
“We put around a lot of positive artwork or wording, different types of sayings,” Sabotnik said. “We try just to make it lighthearted, and I try to think of things to make the kids laugh at least once.”
With so many kids coming into the nurses’ office with assorted issues, Sabotnik and Oman have to make sure they have all their responsibilities and tasks in order.
“Our main responsibility is to take care of the students with illnesses and make sure that everybody is safe and healthy,” Oman said. “We maintain all health records, immunizations, and allergies. We make sure all of our doctors’ orders are on the computer and accounted for. We also give out medication, wound care, and mental health care. We are like the moms of the building.”
In the nurses’ office, every day is a little different, as different kids come in and they all need different types of assistance.
“I feel like it makes the day go by faster,” Sabotnik said. “It is not the same thing every day, just helping the kids and making them feel better. Sometimes you can’t make them feel better, but when you do make them feel better, or say something funny and make them laugh. That’s just like the best thing you know, to make them feel more at ease here.”
Overall, the school nurses are constantly helping everyone who comes into their office to their best ability and always try to put a smile on the students’ faces.
