One of the most popular elective classes, Spanish class remains an important subject that allows many students to expand their horizons on culture, language, and the world. Spanish teacher Angie Keaveney has been teaching the subject at Crown Point High School since 2015.
“I teach Spanish levels one and two, and I am the co-chair of the World Language Department,” Keaveney said. “I sponsor the new pickleball club and also the card club.”
Keaveney has been sponsoring the card club for years, and they meet three times monthly. The card club has remained a very popular club, with about 50 people involved in it. However, Keaveney’s pickleball club is a new development.
“The pickleball club just started. We just had our callout meeting, and our first actual meeting is going to be Monday, and we’ll be heading out to the courts by Eisenhower to play,” Keaveney said.
With eight and a half years at Chesterton and nine years at CPHS, Keaveney has been working as a teacher for a long time. When in college, she started in international business with Spanish, but eventually switched to education.
“Growing up I was always the teacher with my friends, and my mom and my aunt were teachers. And then when I was in high school I loved Spanish class,” Keaveney said.
As a teacher, Keaveney has put in the effort to keep her classroom a fun and happy place.
“I think a positive classroom starts with having great energy,” Keaveney said. “I think kids know when they come into my room that I’m going to be happy and that it’s going to be an energizing day, even if they don’t really want that, that’s what they always get.”
With so many students in her classes, Keaveney tries to make sure every student can feel welcome and learn as best as possible.
