Indiana University’s football team ends their regular season ranked 9th in the nation, holding a strong 11-1 record. Indiana University has not seen a football season as strong as this one in decades. The Hoosiers have mostly been met with win after win, representing a very strong minority of collegiate football teams in the country to have an 11-1 record or higher.
Under Curt Cignetti, IU’s head coach who has been coaching college football for over 40 years, the Hoosiers have seen recent success. His wide knowledge of the sport comes from his time playing college football as well as his time coaching other collegiate teams such as Pitt, Rice, and James Madison. Cignetti knows what he is doing on the field and believes success is achieved through consistency.
“I think what I’ve learned up to this point is that we have unlimited potential as an institution and football program,” Cignetti said in a Sports Illustrated article. “That if you commit daily and do the things you need to do to be successful, there’s no imposed limitations on what you can achieve.”
Cignetti has done an amazing job coaching the team this season. Not only has the team been met with many wins, but the games typically are heavily in their favor. In their 12 game season, the Hoosiers have a combined 520 points, averaging 43.33 points per game while their opponents have a total of 176 points, averaging 14.67 points per game.
The last time the Hoosiers performed this strongly was in 1945, after they had a 9-0-1 season under Coach Bo McMillin.
It is clear that IU has reached new heights regarding their football team throughout this season. This team as well as the new coaching will hopefully lead IU in creating a new football legacy for the school.
