It comes as no surprise that high school students hate homework, and as a result, many will do nearly anything to get out of an assignment. This urgency to create excuses rather than do the work can create some truly outlandish claims in order to condone a certain incomplete assignment.
Students are willing to refer to even some of the most known excuses in the book in an attempt to get out of doing their homework. By being able to use the most well-known homework excuse with a straight face, students exemplify a true dedication to getting out of their responsibilities.
“Believe it or not, I’ve had some students genuinely tell me that their dog ate their homework,” Honors Pre-Calculus and Latin teacher, Mr. Collier said.
In order to relieve themselves of homework assignments, students are willing to come up with even day-to-day excuses for their lack of ability to complete an

assignment. This creative approach to dodging responsibility borders on the line of humor as students utilize cooking or household chores as an excuse.
“I was once told that my student was too busy cooking a steak to do his homework,” science teacher Mr. Ward said.
The creativity employed by students to avoid homework is truly surprising, as students are able to come out with unconventional justifications for their missing work. It is widely known that many students hate homework, but their imaginativeness regarding its escape can be unorthodox.
“When I was in the seventh grade, I lived in a bigger city,” junior Asa Dwight said. “We had one kid tell the teacher that he left his backpack open and a bird flew into it and took his homework packet to ‘build its nest.’”
Students are willing to put themselves in a state of embarrassment to get out of doing homework. A student was willing to put their own personal bathroom experiences on display for the purpose of avoiding work.
“I once heard a kid freshman year say that he was unable to turn in his homework because he accidentally dropped in the toilet while he was going to the bathroom,” junior Thelma Morales said.
In order to get out of doing work, students toe the line of foolishness as they compose excuses that make no sense. Students are willing to work around foolishness and incomprehension in order to try and get their teacher to ignore their missing assignments.
“My freshman year, my friend emailed our teacher to tell him that she could not complete the homework assignment because her WiFi was down,” junior Claire Hovan said. “The funny thing about that is that the email went through without a problem, meaning that the WiFi was fine.”
Overall the way that students are able to get around assignments fosters hilarious creativity that, although potentially inconvenient for teachers and administrators, can be extremely entertaining. The willingness of students to make up outlandish reasoning in hopes of steering clear of work is nearly impressive.
