Geography and AP United States History teacher, Mary Lux, grows a connection with students through keeping a positive attitude when it comes to teaching.
“My school day goes from about 6:40 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.,” Lux said. “I’m normally here until about 4:30 p.m. anyway. I teach students about the curriculum and help them prepare and develop in terms of contents and skills.”
Lux came to teach at CPHS in 2017 after a position opened up and it seemed like the perfect fit, with her kids going to school in the Crown Point Community. Lux quickly found that the best part of working at CPHS was the people surrounding her.
“My favorite part about working here is the kids and the staff,” Lux said. We have a great staff here, and I’ve gotten to work with some really great students.”
When not teaching Geography and APUSH, Lux is working with the kids in her club, Sending Sunshine, an organization that works to send cards to elders.
“They are a club that facilitates engagement with isolated elderly senior citizens by making cards for them,” Lux said. “I had a few students who wanted to start, they were former students of mine, and so I couldn’t turn them down on such a great community outreach program.”
With difficult classes like APUSH, it is important to help students maintain a positive mindset.
“I try to stay positive myself and set an example for them, show that even in circumstances that are less than desirable for you, perhaps personally, always try to see the good and things and to maintain a positive outlook and to continue to commit yourself to working hard at everything that you do,” Lux said.
Lux works with students through her club and classes, and tries to help students become the best students possible.
