Algebra teacher Nick Lewandowski, works hard with his students to help them learn, while also being a sponsor for Key Club, an international organization dedicated to building leaders.
“Crown Point High School is a big high school, but that means it’s action-packed,” Lewandowski said. “There’s always a lot going on. I see around 150 different students a day. So no two days are ever the same, it is really interesting getting to work with all those kids. I feel very fortunate.”
After two years at Wheeler Middle School, Lewandowski switched to teaching high schoolers. When Lewandowski first came to CPHS three years ago, he started helping with Key Club.
“I was in Key Club when I was in high school. When I started teaching at the high school level, I found Mrs. Keaveney, who was the sponsor at the time, and I said I wanted to help. It’s awesome, I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Lewandowski said.
At the recent St. Baldrick’s event, Lewandowski shaved his hair off and helped raise around $18,000.
“I figured I had to shave my hair one of these years. I was going to do it last year, but then I got married this October, so I kind of kicked the can down the road for a year. And then the kids looked at me and said, ‘Well, you don’t have an excuse now’. And I said, ‘You’re right,’” Lewandowski said.
Along with Key Club, Lewandowski focuses on keeping his classroom an effective learning environment by using his positive outlook.
“I think I’m a positive person, so hopefully that’s contagious and that rubs off on them,” Lewandowski said. “It would be easy to nitpick and focus on the negative things, and I feel a lot of things are just out of our control, so we try and control what we can and you realize there’s not a lot you can control. So why sweat all the stuff that you can’t control if it’s just gonna bring you down?”
With Key Club and Algebra students, Lewandowski keeps himself busy improving the school.
