Winners of the 9th annual National Student Production Awards were announced during a ceremony presented by the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The competition recognizes talented high school students from across the country for achievements in filmmaking and journalism. The National winners were selected from submissions previously recognized as winners in the NATAS Regional Chapter competitions.
CPTV News QuickCUT faculty adviser, Chris Gloff started the program to accommodate the ways communication such as news changed especially when it came to students.
“During the pandemic, a lot of our radio/TV course discussions were centered around communicating news to people in a new format. Most of the students admitted they didn’t watch regular TV news. One student came to us with an idea, and as a newsroom we began to develop QuickCUT out of that seedling of an idea. However, none of us had a clue as to how this new format would fair in the outside world and, specifically, competition,” Gloff said. “Over the last three years, we have been honored to be awarded as the best student newscast in the nation. NATAS is the gold standard to which all broadcasters aspire and we’re fortunate to be a part of a school community that empowers students and faculty to grow and be the best.”
Students responsible for producing this newscast include Ryan Welsh, Kailey Palomo, MiRey Fernandez, Ari Pantoja, Trent Josleyn, RJ Swiedals, David Pineda, Sarah Hlebasko and Aiden Hielema, among a number of students who graduated from CPHS last year and are attending journalism schools across the country.
