Cross Country Athlete, Avery Moore (12), prepares to run her last laps of her high school career this year. Through this sport, she has made friends, lots of memories, and learned to persevere through challenges.

Ever since joining in elementary school, Moore has been running cross-country. She wanted something to do to be more involved with her school.

“A lot of my friends were in it, and I was really looking for a way to get more active in my school and just stay more active, physically,” Moore said.

Moore has continued the sport throughout high school, despite facing setbacks. One obstacle that she faced was her injury.

“Freshman and sophomore year, I got two stress fractures during cross country season that took me out of the postseason, both years,” Moore said.

Through this setback, Moore had to put in work to learn to heal. She was taught to focus on improving herself through her recovery.

“[I overcame this with] a lot of hard work, and I had to be willing to listen to what my doctor said and focus on my recovery rather than just focus on getting back into my sport,” Moore said. “So kind of just learning how to focus on myself as a person rather than as an athlete.”

Looking to the future, Moore hopes to go to college at the University of Michigan or Purdue University. She finds both science and Journalism/writing interesting and wants to include both in her future goals.

“I’m hoping to become a pediatric surgeon and then also write books about preventative healthcare for children,” Moore said. “Science is incredibly interesting to me, with the diversity of the topics I will handle. However, I have a natural affinity for writing, and I would love to be able to utilize that to ultimately help others.”

As Moore reaches the finish line of her high school career, she looks forward to her future. She would like to continue cross-country intramurally in college. Through her past years of cross-country, she learned how to overcome challenges and better herself.
