Chess Club had seven members qualify for their State Tournament this year. Considering the club has only been around for two years, the club showed great representation.
Students enjoyed attending their regional and state competitions and competing against different schools.
“Being able to play people from different schools allows me to see a lot more variation in the game. Everyone has their favorite openings that they stick to and their favorite playing styles, so it’s nice to be exposed to other people,” sophomore Samuel McGrath said. “I really hope I will be able to go next year as well.”
Students do not just love Chess Club because of the game itself; they love the people involved in it.
“The reason I joined was because I wanted to learn how to get better at the game and I thought it’d be fun to meet people that like Chess,” sophomore Calum McCaskill said. “Ultimately, I found that Chess Club is a group of kids who really like Chess and I love being there.”
