Indiana’s House Bill 1001 recently cut hundreds of programs and college majors for all Indiana public colleges. Enacted on July 1st and implemented into the fall semester of 2025, 19%, or over 400 degree programs, have either been cut or consolidated, limiting the number of specific degree options students can pursue.
Passed under Governor Mike Braun’s administration, this Bill is aimed at modernizing the higher education system in Indiana and making sure that when students are entering college, there is a higher likelihood they can land a job or use the skills they learn to further their professional careers.
“Just in the past month, our state institutions have taken bold, proactive steps to increase the value of higher education for both students and families, first, through keeping tuition flat, and today, by beginning the process to streamline degree offerings,” Braun said in a press release. “This will help students make more informed decisions about the degree they want to pursue and ensure there is a direct connection between the skills students are gaining through higher education and the skills they need most.”
Indiana private colleges are not affected by this legislation and will still continue with their current programs.
