In a high school senior’s life, May is known as the month of decisions. This is the time when colleges and universities set hard deadlines for admitted students. This may also be the time when high school and college seniors close a chapter of their lives and turn the next page.
May is the month when many seniors around the nation partake in events from late proms and early graduations to senior sunsets and sunrises. May is the month when many things come to an end, and new things begin. For example, May is the time of year when spring slowly comes to an end and summer begins. It is also a time when many graduates go to college or graduate and are now working on another degree of some sort. No matter the story, there are decisions bound to happen in May as it is a time of transition.
High school seniors may understand this all too well as they have already made their decision on what was popularly known as “decision day” on May first for many universities or have committed to a trading program or military forces. This time of transition comes with much excitement but also some unwanted stress and maybe even sadness for some. As high school comes to an end, many are recognizing and experiencing what can be referred to as “graduation depression.” As seniors, we can be feeling sad about leaving what we once considered “normal” or “our entire life” to embark on a new journey, but it can also be bittersweet.
This article is not meant to add to any unwanted stress but to recognize this season’s transition. As many are graduating, many people are going far beyond. Some are staying close to home, while others are going away. Many friendships could potentially come to an end, while some might flourish. Many relationships with advisors, partners, family members and more might feel that transition or distance that is now ahead, but it is all a part of life. People we have either known all our lives or just for a period of time may soon become “the friend I knew growing up” or “my friend from high school.”
Furthermore, all the lives of the Class of 2026 are changing, and may it be for the better. As time continues to move on and the clocks continue to tick, the decision made in May will forever change the Class of 2026. May it challenge them to grow mentally, physically and emotionally. May it be a decision well thought out and prayed for. May it be a moment in time reflected on and cherished forever.
