On January 7, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the brand new food pyramid.
The last food pyramid consisted of grains at the bottom with 6-11 servings. The second layer is fruits with 2-4 servings and the vegetables with 3-5 servings. The third layer is composed of the meats, protein and nuts with 2-3 servings and the milks and cheeses with also 2-3 servings. At the very top of the pyramid were the fats, oils, and sweets, which are recommended to be used sparingly.
The new pyramid has flipped the previous one upside down. Meats, proteins, and vegetables have replaced grains at the bottom. Fruits are still in the middle and whole grains are now at the top, suggesting much fewer servings than the last pyramid.
