Haley Crane is a Freshman English teacher at Crown Point High School and strives to create a positive classroom environment for students every day.

A responsibility that comes with teaching English is ensuring that all the requirements are met throughout the year. Crane strives to reach all of her daily goals in the classroom.

“We read a bunch of short stories, we read To Kill a Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet, and my other responsibilities are trying to keep the kids engaged with the curriculum that we have to teach them,” Crane said.

Outside of the learning aspect of school, Crane strives to put a smile on every single student’s face that enters her classroom.

“Working with the students each and every day, and going in knowing that I have the opportunity each day to brighten someone’s day, like just a smile or a kind word, and just like trying to be that positive presence in the lives of my students,” Crane said.

One of the challenges that numerous teachers face is holding the attention of students, and for Crane, that is also her biggest challenge. Removing phones from the classroom has helped Crane to overcome this.

“A challenge would be trying to hold their attention,” Crane said. “It seems like no matter what kind of song or dance I do, I always kind of fight for attention. But having no phones has made a really big difference.”

Overall, Crane pushes every student to do their best by creating a positive environment and working with the technique of hands-on teaching.
