“You never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory,” Dr. Suess said. In other words, one does not realize the importance of an experience until it is in the past.
Cherishing the past is an integral part of building a future. As future CP alumni move into the next steps in their lives, many have come to appreciate their time as Bulldogs and shift their views of highschool towards ones of nostalgia.
Extracurriculars
Crown Point football is an extremely important aspect of the CPHS experience, as many feel as though the student body becomes united during these games. The excitement during these events is polarizing, and creates an ultimate feeling of appreciation as peers are able to cheer together for a common cause. This unity is extremely important when considering the nostalgia associated with being a student.
“My favorite Crown Point memory was when our football team won the semi state game last year and we got to rush the field,” senior Mikayla Vandergast said. “Everything was very surreal when we realized. I was grabbing onto my friends just trying not to lose them in the rush of excitement.”
Watching sporting events is not the only indispensable aspect of Crown Point athletics.
Being an athlete and getting the privilege to compete with one’s team is also an extremely uniting aspect of athletics, and is one many students remember with fondness.
“My favorite memory is the last time I set a personal record before I left lifting due to health issues,” senior Vivian Keene said. “Everyone was so supportive and I got to take in what an amazing community the weight room truly is, and how much spending time in there has affected me as a person throughout these last four years.”
Even in seemingly individual sports, the team as a whole creates an atmosphere of support that allows for athletes to be successful. This safety net of people allows for athletes to develop relationships with their teammates that may last throughout highschool and beyond.
The rigor of coursework alongside academic-based extracurriculars allows for the formation of important bonds between team members. Whether it be a competitive academic competition, a difficult class or a creativity-based learning process, students develop key memories from both teachers and clubs alike.
“My favorite memory would be our yearbook trip to Philadelphia,” senior Aadil Khan said. “Getting to bond with my classmates and attend courses to both further my love and skills for journalism was such a rewarding opportunity. We’ve all gotten so much closer because of it.”
The rewards stemming from both academic and athletic extracurriculars, alongside the bonds formed between teammates and fans are some of the most memorable experiences for students.
Dances
High school dances are also known for being unifying and important aspects to the high school experience. The process of getting ready, taking pictures, and dancing with your friends is widely-known as an incredible part of being in high school. Being able to be a part of such a memorable experience is something that students remember for decades to come.
“My senior homecoming was my best high school memory,” senior Jack Keagle said. “I have gotten to know so many people from that point on, so getting to meet new people and make new friends was great.”
High school dances, although a seemingly cliché aspect of the high school experience, allow for some of the best memories as all groups are able to bond over these important memories. It is not only the dance itself that creates this special bond, but the process of getting ready also provides a unique reminder of the best parts of high school.
“My favorite high school memory was my junior year homecoming,” senior Izzy Egner said. “I remember having a really great time that night and I had a lot of fun getting ready for the dance and being at the dance with everyone.”
Overall, the entire process of school dances–from the getting ready process to the after parties–are some of student’s most cherished memories.
Friendships
Undeniably, the friendships formed throughout highschool are some of the most formative and important relationships of one’s life. The memories made, the habits developed and the support given by one’s peers is a key aspect of high school.
“Waking up early to hide out with my team in front of our target’s house for senior assassin was one of my favorite memories,” senior Kayla Bikoff said.
Being able to experience even seemingly small things will have a lasting impact on a student. The bonds formed from high school may not last forever, but they will forever have an impact on others.
“I was able to meet Riley Lustina through the cross country team, and she to this day is one of my best friends,” senior Jane Myers said. “Being able to have that friendship is something I am extremely grateful for.”
The friendships formed from high school truly have the potential to be lasting, and have a deep and important meaning to many. High school friendships, although sometimes misleadingly trivial, are truly a measure of what it means to be a teen and allow for the development of some of the best memories.
Although high school may be difficult at times, it is a prime opportunity to make friends, build an education, and gain meaningful experiences. High school allows for kids to form lifelong memories alongside their peers, while simultaneously learning who they are meant to be.
