Jacob Duffy (9) went from having six or seven clubs available in middle school to about sixty different clubs in high school. Duffy enjoys being involved in numerous clubs at the school.
Last year at Wheeler, Duffy participated in the drama club and ultimately fell in love with it.
“My favorite part of the fall was going to practice for the play that year,” Duffy said. “Last year I was Smee from Peter Pan, and I loved it so much.”
Duffy wanted to try out something different, and Key Club caught his eye.
“When I was walking around Bulldog Rush, I picked up a paper and saw what they did,” Duffy said. “I wanted to be a part of it as it seemed fun and could look good for college.”
Duffy tried out for the musical this year alongside his friends.
“I wanted to try out for the Wizard of Oz this year as I liked the fun part, flying monkeys. My friends said that part was perfect for me,” Duffy said. After auditions, I didn’t get a call back, but at least I made ensemble,” Duffy said.
Duffy was surprised to hear about the pickleball club and just had to join it.
“This summer, my dad showed me how to play Pickleball at the YMCA, and I liked it a lot,” Duffy said. It was like easy tennis, and I played with my sister and mom. I even bought a racket before I went to the call-out meeting.”
Duffy enjoys being active in school, but he finds that it can be hard to choose between the wide variety of extracurricular activities.
“This is my first year in high school, and I didn’t know that theater rehearsals happened every day,” Duffy said. “When joining the pickleball club, they meet every Monday till 4, and Key Club meets here and there, so I will miss days of rehearsal. And having to do school, it’s exhausting trying to do all,” Duffy said.
After a while, Duffy came up with an idea.
“I want to do all clubs, but pickleball is a sport, and I don’t think it’s a winter sport,” Duffy said. “This year I will try out for the musical. If I don’t make it, there is always a play in Spring. There is also always next semester or even next year to try something new,” Duffy said.
In the end, Duffy will do everything in his power to participate in as many activities as possible. Even if he has to give up one plan, he has another right in his pocket waiting to be used
