Outside of school, Morgan Slazyk (10) is in color guard. Slazyk has many memories of color guard, including how she ended up wanting to be in color guard.

Slazyk’s passion for spinning began at an early age, influenced by the stories and encouragement from her Grandpa. Her grandfather’s enthusiasm for the activity sparked her curiosity and inspired her to try it herself.

“Growing up, my grandpa would talk to me about how cool he thought the color guard people were in football games, and I would make my own things to spin like makeshift batons and little flags,” Slazyk said.

This childhood fascination stayed with Slazyk, leaving a lasting impression over the years. As she grew older, it continued to shape her interests and inspire her choices.

“When I saw the high school had a color guard, I immediately knew that’s what I wanted to join the team,” Slazyk said.

Joining the program at Crown Point High School not only allowed her to pursue her lifelong interest but also introduced her to a community where she truly felt at home. She quickly found friends who shared her enthusiasm and supported her both on and off the field.

“It’s been so good honestly, I feel like it has helped me realize that there are so many people that are loud and talkative like me,” Slazyk said.

Being surrounded by such outgoing and energetic people has led her to some really fun experiences together.

“We have this thing called wacky water Wednesday during band camp. It’s a big water fight we would all chase each other with water guns or buckets trying to soak each other, My favorite memory of it was my friend CJ chasing me around with his water gun because I dumped a full Stanley cup of water all over him” Slazyk said.

From a childhood fascination inspired by her grandpa to finding a sense of belonging and fun in her high school color guard, Slazyk’s journey highlights how early passions can lead to lasting memories and meaningful friendships. Through color guard, Slazyk has not only developed her skills and confidence but also built a supportive community where she feels truly at home.
