Since eleventh grade, Ava Valdez (12) has switched from being homeschooled to attending Crown Point High School. During her time here, Valdez has taken advantage of the boundless opportunities offered here.
Valdez has explored some of the extracurriculars offered here. She mentions how Theater and Choir helped her growth.
“Being in Theater and Choir has given me a direction in life. When I first started doing the behind-the-scenes technical work for Theater, that’s when I discovered my passion,” Valdez said. “Choir helped me open up and be more confident in myself.”
Transferring to Crown Point High School has allowed Valdez to find her passion and pursue it further. Valdez mentions how her extracurriculars led to what she wants to do in the future.
“Indiana University Bloomington is my top choice to attend. Once I visited Bloomington, I immediately fell in love with the campus and especially its art programs. Seeing two different auditoriums just on one campus checked my boxes for a good art school,” Valdez said.
Transitioning from homeschooling to attending Crown Point High School was a new experience for Valdez. Valdez mentions her biggest challenge in switching from these environments.
“Switching was really a huge cultural shift. Instantly transitioning to a more than 8-hour workday, rather than enjoying free time at home, was definitely new for me. While it was challenging, the structure here makes me feel more organized and comfortable,” Valdez said.
While switching was challenging, Valdez recalls her favorite parts of being homeschooled. Valdez mentions how being in close proximity to her family was a homeschooling perk.
“The best part of being homeschooled was definitely being close to my family all the time. My mom was really good at teaching because she could be hard when she needed to be, but also patient and understanding.”
In conclusion, both homeschooling and Crown Point High School have impacted Valdez and contributed to her personal growth. Her homeschooling experience has led Valdez to bond closer to her family. Additionally, her extracurricular activities here have helped Valdez discover and pursue a career in art.
