Life as a teacher can be stressful, as every single day teachers are expected to come to school to direct learning and help students navigate adolescence. Being responsible for over 100 kids can be hectic and overwhelming. To most, this responsibility is too heavy, but for Amanda Campos and Erin Rawls, that is just a part of the fun. From creating an entertaining and educational learning environment to providing extra help, these best friends can do it all.
Math is a polarizing subject, which may be easy for some but difficult for others. Trying to teach a subject like this can be difficult and keeping students engaged is a challenge. However, for these two teachers, this challenge is no match for their teaching styles. “I try to be very energetic, every day, no matter what,” Mrs.Campos said. “We have to be here, we have to learn math, so let’s try to have some fun with it!”
Despite having fun lesson plans and an upbeat attitude, motivation can be hard for students to find. Motivation is not something that is taught, it is a drive. Helping students find their drive is another challenge as a teacher. “I encourage my students to realize that they can do difficult things,” Mrs. Rawls said. “So many students tell me they can not do something and I do my best to change their minds and cheer them on.”
First impressions are thought to be one of the most important aspects of social life and for these two teachers first impressions create friendships that last a lifetime. “I was a brand new teacher when I first met Mrs. Rawls, and she was so helpful,” Mrs. Campos said. “I taught at Lake Central High School with her, and it was nice to meet someone so helpful and friendly at such a big school.”
While teaching is their main job, friendship is important too. When teachers are able to bond with other teachers, they are able to create new ideas and plan together. This not only decreases the workload on teachers, but it can help create a healthy work environment. For Mrs.Rawls and Mrs.Campos this is exactly the case. “I love working with Mrs. Campos because she has so many great ideas and always wants to improve what we are doing,” Mrs. Rawls said. “She keeps me feeling much younger than I am!”
