Ten Things I Hate About You was released in 1999, and is still an integral part of pop culture today. The witty dialogues between all of the characters make the movie so much more. Especially between Kat and her father, who is deathly afraid of his two teen daughters dating. His constant disapproval makes Bianca only want to rebel more, and the antics between the two really adds to the movie. There are so many iconic scenes that continue to be referenced to this day. For example, when Heath Ledger’s character Patrick, sings in front of the whole school in order to woo his love interest, Kat. Julia Stiles’ portrayal of Kat was done so well, making Kat relatable to a lot of teenage girls watching. Her constant switch between anger and vulnerability really humanizes the character, and her character development throughout the film showcases how difficult life can be for teenage girls. The dynamic between Kat and her sister Bianca is very realistic, and truly captures how sisters interact. Personally, I have a younger sister, so a lot of their disagreements are truly realistic to what my sister and I may get into at home. The plot line is both focused on the development of characters along with the love story between Kat and Patrick. The addition of the love story aspect makes this movie so much more. This movie is truly an amazing mix of comedy, love, and regular teenage problems. My personal favorite part though, is the soundtrack. Full of nineties classics from bands like The Cardigans, and Letters to Cleo, it truly appealed to me. In all, this movie truly is a gem of cinema, and worth the watch.
