In high school, lots of students focus on their grade point average. Grade point average, or GPA, is a cumulative score based on grades. Every grade range is worth a certain amount of points, which are then averaged. Many students tirelessly work towards a high GPA. Students will pick their courses based on what would help or hurt their GPA. Many students will take honors classes for GPA boosts. All in all, keeping a high grade point average is a difficult task.
The Crown Point boys swim and dive team has recently had a team average of a 3.75 GPA. This is a high average for a whole team. This accomplishment shows how hardworking this team is in and out of the water.
Balancing school and swimming is not easy. The boys are expected to wake up at 5 a.m. and lift or swim depending on the day. Then the boys will come to school, just to practice again directly after until 5 p.m. Despite all this, these athletes find a way to make it work. “I prioritize school after I swim, so when I go home, I do my school work, and then I study,” sophomore Gabe Castillo said.
This team has varying study habits; for some, sleep can be a priority. “I stay up later, study for tests, and if I don’t have morning practice, I usually sleep in, try to get as much sleep as possible,” Junior Jackson Petry said.
For others, keeping their grades up can mean taking advantage of time in study hall. For sophomore Jeremiah Biancardi, this is how he keeps his grades up. “I work hard in study hall and use my time productively,” Biancardi said.
Keeping grades up can also mean talking to teachers to get help. For junior Austin Hunt this is the case. “I keep my grades up by communicating with my teachers and talking about what kind of assignments I need to get done and when they’re due,” Hunt said.
Some students may have more abstract study habits. For Junior Collin Bood, music is a way to focus and get schoolwork done. “my study habits are listening to music and just kind of paying attention to what I’m doing,” Bood said.
All in all this is a tremendous achievement for the team. Keeping a high grade point average is not an easy fleet and various study habits were needed for such an achievement. Despite how difficult it is to balance school and a sport these athletes are doing it with discipline and grit.
