Upon entering a grocery store, one will be welcomed by many different types of processed foods. Boxes of cookies, bags of chips and bottles of soda are what decorate the walls of every grocery store in the United States. Typically processed foods are cheaper than healthier foods, it is extremely easy to go with the cheaper option and buy junk food. Instead of picking the foods with additives and food coloring, choose whole foods. Whole foods can be defined as foods that are natural, unprocessed or slightly processed and are kept as close to their natural state. Eating whole foods will leave one living a healthier, happier and more energized lifestyle.
The reality behind ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is purely profit-driven. UPFs go through machine processing that no longer makes them whole foods anymore. These changes happen to give the product a longer shelf-life, enhanced taste, and sometimes simply more convenience. This makes the food easier and quicker to digest, consequently not giving that full feeling after eating. These processed foods do not satiate, it can cause overconsumption of these foods which may lead to buying more product and more revenue for the companies.
This is not the only reason why UPFs are not ideal for anyone. UPFs are also linked to an abundance of health issues like obesity, cancer, diabetes and gastrointestinal diseases. Eating whole foods can help the body fight against all of those diseases.
Whole foods provide your body with the necessary nutrients to support your immune system and fight illness. Eating natural foods can also supply fiber, which is needed for gut health and antioxidants, which help protect cells.

Where to start? The easiest place to start is just by buying more unprocessed foods. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins and healthy fats. These can be found in mostly any grocery store if you just look a little closer. Whole foods are also so delicious. When it comes to recipes and combinations to try, there will never be a shortage. Whole foods provide flavors and textures that no UPFs could ever provide.
So, next grocery trip, really look around and take in all of the options. There will always be processed foods and unhealthy choices, but take a step towards living healthier and pick up a few better options. It does not have to be a full pantry or fridge reset, just a few things here and there will be beneficial.
