Inklings December Issue 2023

This month’s cover features the Varsity Football at the IHSAA State Finals.  Bulldogs Take a Bite Out of History highlights the historical accomplishments of the team this season.

We also feature trades students, student resource officer Leslie Malerich, light blue jerseys, siblings in sports, and more.

Hayden Kay
Hayden Kay, Editor-in-Chief
Hayden Kay is a senior at Crown Point High School. Kay was on the Excalibur Yearbook staff for two years and served as the Website Manager her junior year. This is her first and last year on the Inklings staff and she is excited for the new challenge. When she's not in the J-Lab, Kay is the President of Key Club, President of Fashion Club, Vice President of NAHS, and a member of NHS. She plans to pursue journalism or media in college.
Rylin Sherron
Rylin Sherron, Multi-Media Chief Journalist
Rylin Sherron is a senior at Crown Point High School and is part of the Excalibur Yearbook and Inklings staff. Sherron has been involved in the school’s journalism program for four years, becoming copy editor and winning Writer of the Year in her sophomore and junior years. This year, Sherron took the title of Multi-Media Chief Journalist overseeing PR, Events, Social Media, and the Web. Outside of school, Sherron is involved in NHS and works for GreatNews.Life as a New Media Journalist. Sherron plans on majoring in journalism and forensic science, wanting to be an Investigative Journalist.
Emilee Lucht
Emilee Lucht, Advanced Sports Editor & Crown Town Media Director
Emilee Lucht is a senior at Crown Point High School. This is Lucht’s third year on the Excalibur Yearbook staff. She is the Crown Town Media Director and the Advanced Sports Editor of the Excalibur Yearbook. She loves photography and the many different aspects that surround it. Lucht started taking pictures in 7th grade and continued from there. She not only loves taking pictures for school-related things but also senior pictures and portrait pictures. Other than yearbook, Lucht is involved in managing the Wrestling Team. She has been managing since her sophomore year and has been co-head manager since her junior year.
Annabella Angarone
Annabella Angarone is a Freshman at Crown Point High School.  This is her first year on the Inklings staff and hopes to have many more years to come.  When she is not writing for Inklings, she takes part in the Aviation club, Card club and is a part of Show Choir. Even though Angarone still has a few years before college, since she was 7 years old she has been working on screenplays for hopefully her future career.
Grace Cappas
Grace Cappas, Lead Writer
Grace Cappas is a junior at Crown Point High School. She took journalism as a freshman, and this is her second year on the Inklings staff. Besides her involvement on staff, she is also involved in National Honor Society and The Cure Club. Cappas plans on majoring in psychology and journalism in college.
Mason Erbini
Mason Erbini is a sophomore at Crown Point High School. After taking the journalism class his freshman year, he is now an official writer for the Inklings Staff. Outside of journalism, he enjoys being a captain on the Speech and Debate Team and being an avid officer of Business Professionals of America. After high school, he intends to pursue a college major relating to Business.
Ashley Johnson
Ashley Johnson is a junior at Crown Point High School. She took beginning journalism last year, and this is her first year on the Inklings staff. She likes writing and would love to write for a news website in college. After high school, she wants to go to Notre Dame and become a dermatologist. When she is not writing for Inklings, she is usually practicing with the band or working at Strack and Van Til.
Katie Mahle
Katie Mahle, Lead Writer
Katie Mahle is a junior at Crown Point High School. She took journalism during her freshman year, this is her second year on the newspaper staff helping with the design of the newspaper and she also is the sole writer for the people genre. Other than her involvement in the High School News Paper she is also a leader in CASS, the school's mentorship program, as well as a Key club leader. She is vice president of the Interact club and is in NHS. She loves being able to lead and help others in times of need.
Evangeline Montanez
Evangeline Montanez is a Sophomore at Crown Point High School and a Lead Writer for Inklings. This is her first official year on Inklings staff after joining beginning journalism her Freshman year. When she is not writing for Inklings she is at the gym or hanging out with friends. In college she plans on getting her undergraduate degree and moving forward to work in the dentistry field with her dad.
Avery Moore
Avery Moore is a sophomore at Crown Point High School and a new addition to the Inklings staff. After taking the Journalism class as a freshman and helping with an occasional publication, she is now an official feature writer for the Inklings staff. When she is not writing for the newspaper, she is either running for the cross-country team or debating with the school’s Speech and Debate team. In college, she plans on majoring in Economics and Philosophy, and later going to law school.
Ariel Moore
Ariel Moore, Lead Writer
Ariel Moore is a Senior in high school that is just living for the weekend so that she can graduate and continue on with her life. She enjoys drawing, reading, writing, and binge-watching One Piece in her free time. She also happens to be an avid roller skater and loves learning new tricks.
Eris Pauley
Eris Pauley is a junior at Crown Point High School. She took photo journalism during her sophomore year falling inlove with the exciting world of Journalism. She enjoys writing and taking photos making the Newspaper a perfect combonation for her. In school she is involved with the Stray dogs club, an improv club run by Mrs. Zubbrigen. Having fun is her biggest passion with everything she does.
Maylani Velazquez
Maylani Velazquez is a junior at Crown Point High School. She decided to take the Beginning Journalism her sophomore year and accelerated to be part of the Inklings team. She realized that she wants to explore more in the social media field. She loves to meet new people and make connections. While she works in helping Inklings with Social Media platforms, she also works on working in different fields of media by doing film projects, photoshoots, and more for her portfolio. She loves to learn something new each day as she thinks if this is something she wants to pursue as a career.
Ma’Rae Wallace, Lead Writer
Ma’Rae Wallace is a Sophomore at Crown Point High School and Sports Writer for Inklings. This is her first year on staff. Wallace loves writing and wants to learn more about it, which is why she joined Inklings. She is also involved with Dance and Student Council. She has many interests in life and writing is one of them. Wallace thinks she can definitely see writing in her future. Writing is in her everyday life whether it's sports writing or personal writing. There's more to writing than what meets the eye and that's what Wallace is exploring.
