Crown Point High School is testing the waters by reintroducing half days for finals. This change can be both beneficial and detrimental to the testing students for various reasons.
This change can be beneficial to the students because it can improve the students’ attention and it can encourage students to do better on their exams. “Embracing shorter exam periods would not only ease the burden on students but also promote a healthier approach to assessment,” staff members of The Trailblazer said. With finals taking place on half days, it gives students a longer amount of free time to look forward to; therefore, students will be more inclined to attend the exams.
This new idea could also be harmful to some students who may believe there is no point in showing up for half day exams or even just any half day. Of course this would be harmful to the student in the long run as they would have to come back into the school during summer break to take the finals he or she missed. Taking final exams on half days could also cause extra unnecessary stress to students. “While the new exam schedule was built with an intent to help students, it’s proving to be detrimental for learning and limits the success of students,” Emily Schmidt from Charger Press said. Having many exams in one shorter day is likely to have students stress-studying in fear of failing or doing poorly on the test.
Overall, CPHS will find out how this newly introduced final exam schedule will treat the students. It is hoped that everything goes well but alas, we will have to try to know.
