Girls flag football is emerging one play at a time. The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has now approved girls flag football as an “emerging sport” as of 2025. This now includes Crown Point High School (CPHS), which is offering an opportunity to incorporate a girls flag football team. The team is composed of 25 girls who are eager to play flag football. Even though flag football is contactless, this sport offers players the same opportunity to develop key athletic skills, teamwork and agility that contact sports provide.
Flag football is composed of four quarters, each 10 minutes long. On the offensive side, the team is trying to get the ball to the endzone while starting at the 24 yard line. The defense’s main goal on the field is to try to grab the flag of the player carrying the ball. If the defensive player manages to grab the flag, the play ends and the team picks up where the last person had possession of the ball.
The new addition of flag football to the lineup of other IHSAA sports has sparked excitement in student athletes. “It’s actually kind of crazy because flag football is so new, so I definitely think it’s taking pretty big steps in the competitive world,” senior Madigan McCormick said. Flag football is taking exciting new steps in the sports world and is opening up new opportunities for girls at Crown Point.
Despite all of the competitiveness flag football brings there is still a sense of family within the team. For junior Kaylee Basiaga, this sport is more than just a game.
“It is fantastic,” Basiaga said. “It is probably one of the most tight knit communities I’ve ever been in.”
The addition of flag football has brought a new sense of family and belonging to student athletes.
Between the team spirit before and during games and the inclusivity that this opportunity offers, the girls flag football team is taking CPHS athletics to a new level. The team has worked hard to show their skills and dedication while still incorporating a sense of community on and off the field. The girls flag football team continues to bring confident and fast-paced games while still being connected as a team.
