The impact that social media has on the lives of its users is deeper than expected. The mindless scrolling on various social media sites, catalyzed by influencers, is feeding young minds harmful ideas. During this time of year, influencers post fall-themed content consisting of fall fashion, drinks, makeup, activities, and more.
One like, share, or repost on a video about fall can change one’s entire algorithm. The more people like fall ideas and content, the more videos there are, and the more people talk about them. Once an influencer can get their audience talking about their content, then they have reached their goal of influencing. When word gets around that something new and seasonal is out, people instantly gravitate towards it.
Influencers make a product popular and appealing to their audience, which makes them want to buy it or invest in that product. This leads to a higher demand for the product, which means more money and materials are being imported and exported.
Once a world-renowned influencer posts something, their followers are instantly engaged. If an influencer posts a product or does a review, followers will be influenced to buy it, talk about it, repost it, share it, and more. This is a repeated cycle that not only happens in the fall, but all year round. Fall trends then grow and increase consumerism during this season, causing environmental degradation, financial strain, classism, and more. All of these negatives are ultimately the result of the growing ideation of influencers and a herd mentality of the masses.
