Pro: Extending breaks would make up for any lost time in the summer, and this way students could feel as though each break is long enough to recuperate. Several weeks of back-to-back learning are stressful for teenagers. Adding extra time to breaks minimizes burnout and allows students and teachers to recharge. This way, students come back to school refreshed, prepared and motivated. Cutting off a chunk of summer would also reduce the chances of students forgetting all of the information they learned throughout the previous year. Furthermore, extending other breaks gives families more opportunities to plan out a vacation during less expensive time slots. Overall, shrinking summer and adding that time to additional breaks gives the most benefits to both individual students and whole families.
Con: The Crown Point Community School Corporation allows multiple breaks throughout the year: fall, spring, winter and the real star – summer. Most of these breaks are about a week long with the exception of winter break and summer break. Having a longer summer break is better for students and teachers because it allows the many people that travel throughout the summer months to have more time to experience new places. If schools were to remove time from summer to fulfill other breaks throughout the year, it would disrupt the flow of travel and mess up students’ schedules. A full summer break is integral to allowing students to build a solid world-view outside of the strict school environment.
