Pro:
During students’ high school careers, seniors are given the option to include an internship within their schedule. The internship can be with companies or workplaces that provide students with the opportunity to work and develop work-based skills for their future careers. This option allows high school seniors to work in a setting that may help them gain better employability skills and be better prepared for the future job that they are pursuing. Internships are also a resume builder that many companies may take into consideration while hiring for job positions. This can also help students to network at different places to create contacts within this field and discover possible future employment after college if attending. Also, if the internship is paid, students will also gain the opportunity to make money and save for future needs like college or future bills. Internships are also a low-risk way to discover what career interests you may want to pursue or find out if this career choice is not a good fit. The senior internship program provides students with opportunities for future employability skills, connections and even an opportunity to discover a true calling within their future career.
Con:
Senior internships are widely known for giving access to students to explore future job careers. However, internships are also recognized as a way for students to take advantage of this and leave school early. When presented with the opportunity of leaving during the middle of the school day to intern for a company, many students only hear the “leaving early” part, and it is all they take into consideration. This causes more students to sign up for internships simply to be able to leave the building early, losing the real purpose for internships. Now defeating the whole purpose, schools should start restricting access to senior internships to prevent students from taking advantage in the wrong way.
