The point of year has been reached where students begin to hit a wall. Burnout in high school students is a very common problem.
According to The Learning Counsel, an American Psychological Association (APA) survey found over half of high school students are labeled as stressed or burnt out.
Teenagers face pressure from many areas. Whether it is pressure from oneself, peers, or adults, it builds up. 81% of teens questioned in the survey feel negative pressure in day-to-day life.
Many teens feel a need to reach or stay at a certain standard, this being a standard placed by society. The youth put pressure on themselves and may push themselves past their limits to reach this standard.
Additionally, parents can be a primary contributing factor to this pressure. Parents and guardians commonly demand that their children excel in academics and extracurricular activities. Adolescents acknowledge the high expectations placed upon them, and these standards may affect them more than parents realize.
“Students can feel burnt out because they stay up really late studying and then have to wake up really early and get ready for school. Then you have all your hard classes to get through and take all the tests you studied for. After that you go to sports practices or games. Next, most people have jobs and do not get home until around nine and you have to study more on top of that just to do it all again the next day,” sophomore Kennedy Benish said.
Many teenagers have a very busy schedule. They have to find a way to balance school, homework, extracurriculars, and for some, a job. This leaves students with sparse breaks and free time. Teenagers are expected, with inadequate rest, to keep up with this rush. It is no surprise so many teens are feeling burned out.
In the moment it may feel like there is no escape once one attains burn out. It seems like they will never catch a break and can be a never-ending cycle. However, getting more sleep, spending more time outdoors, using the internet less or seeking professional help can help avoid these feelings.
